I’ve chosen to review the Studion scented candle by the Swedish brand & Other Stories (H&M’s more stylish sister) as my first blog post after this long break. Being a mid-range priced candle it has very positively surprised me with its scent throw and quality.
I really enjoy the fashion and lifestyle brand & Other Stories. I was, however, doubtful if to invest in one of their candles. I have previously tried some H&M ones and was very disappointed with the scent throw [update: This statement is no longer valid –> see this post]. & Other Stories convinced me with gorgeous aestethics and the idea behind the design.
The basic collection consists of four candles, inspired by specific locations in the & Other Stories ateliers in Paris and Stockholm. New York perfumer Jérome Epinette of renowned fragrance specialist Robertet, responsible for the creation of the collection dedicated the candle Studion to the brand’s concrete photography studio in Stockholm. It is no doubt, like the other free candles in the range, a perfect addition to minimalist, contemporary interiors.
Size and burn time:
Standard size –> 190g/ 6.7 oz, burns for 45 hours.
Standard size –> £19.00/ € 25
& Other Stories is available in 12 European countries as well as the US.
I did buy the candle in the store after a fast “see and sniff” test as I was very surprised by its vibrant smell and slightly visible oil-swirls, that might be a sign of high percentage essential oil content in natural wax. It’s a pity the brand provides no information about the ingredients neither on the tumbler or box, not on the webpage. I’ve contacted the brand and they promised to get back to me on this matter.
Update: I got an aswer from the producer stating, that they use a mix of high quality synthetic wax and oils as well as a cotton wick.
The candle states “Made in France” which made me trust my purchase even more, as the best candles I’ve ever bought were always of French production.
Subjective scent and scent throw evaluation:
The producer provides a detailed scent breakdown (and not the ingredients?) on the webpage, listing the following:
- Top: Bergamot, Cardamon, Lemon
- Heart: Fig, Violet Leaves, Mate Leaves
- Base: Almond, Coconut, Blond Woods
Studion is a very warm and earthy fragrance with a strong fig scent. Unfortunately, I do not have “Figuier” by Diptyque anymore, but as far as my scent memory takes me back I’d say they are almost the same. Studion has an additional warm coconut-cardamon note, which makes it a perfect winter alternative for Figuier lovers. The Diptyque classic has received a lot of dupe wannabees over the years, yet Studion is the only one worth mentioning (not the only one anymore). It is a candle truly luxurious in feel and scent creation. As to scent throw it filled our small one bedroom apartment in around 2 hours, concentrating the cardamon and fig scents in the place on burning and dispersing the light and sweet base notes in the further area of the apartment.
The tumbler is made out of matte, concrete-like white ceramic with an engraving in the back
“Bougie Parfumee & Other Stories” and a label in the front. The tumbler has a small horizontal “dent”, which keeps a white decorative string in place. The candle is sold in a white sturdy tube-shaped box made of cardboard. I very much enjoy the minimalistic packaging and design. My Bae doesn’t like the feel of matte ceramic, but enjoys the design as well.
The candle burns very nicely, reaching a full melt pool after around 5 hours.
Would I repurchase:
I will definitely try other candles from this brand. I’m curious about their “Kungsholmstorg” candle, which at first sniff reminded me of Feu de Bois, as well as the brand new collection.
Where to buy: Official producer’s webpage as well as regular boutiques.
I purchased mine in the & Other Stories brand store on Heiligeweg 26–28, 1012XR Amsterdam.
