Finally a long awaited review of my first NEOM candle called “Awaken the senses”. For quite some time have I been curious to try this organic British brand and I chose the citrus “Awaken the senses” as was my first crack at NEOM. It was a risky one, no doubt, as I am not fond of orange scent, and it being rather cheap, it is usually being used in all citrus candles or cosmetics. Therefore, I usually try to avoid citrus candles. Fortunately, not this time.
Awaken the senses comes from the “Boost your energy” line of NEOM candles. According to the producer it contains an “expert blend” of 21 pure essential oils that will not only detoxify, but also invigorate your mind and body. NEOM specializes in aromatherapy and claims to offer expert holistic support in well-being, so I had really high hopes of this candle.
Size and burn time:
Standard size –> 185g/ 6.5 oz, burns for 45 hours.
Standard size candles cost currently £30.00 on the official British website, and £45.00 for the bigger 3-wick version (420g). A small “travel” size (75g) is also available for a lower price of £16.00. You can often find offers on NEOM products, or get a hold of a gift set, which often include one of the candles and are of great value. I actually found “Awaken the senses” in TKMaxx for a mind blowing price of £13.00 (for the 185g candle).
According to Nicola Elliott, NEOM’s founder and creative director claims “They are not just pretty candles that smell nice. They have true therapeutic benefits”.
In order to be talking about aromatherapeutic benefits we have to first ensure the highest quality ingredients. After all. according to the scientists, the smell receptors in our nose connect with parts of our brain responsible for emotions and memories. So if we can and want to influence our health with scents, let’s make in the best possible way.
- tart yet bright grapefruit essential oil, which presents detoxifying and uplifting benefits. It help to energize and awake.
- lime, which is a known antioxidant and works towards strengthening the immune systems as well as cleansing and renewing the mind. It is considered the most aromatically potent of the citrus oils.
- last but not least, the note of bergamot, which is known to help against depression, anxiety, urinary tract infections and nervous indigestion. It adds complexity and richness to any citrus blend, thanks to it’s almost floral undertones.
According to the producer, NEOM candles contain around 15-19 ml of pure essential oils per standard candle (and 30-40 ml for the bigger, three-wick candles). It makes them not only smell wonderful but also have true therapeutic benefits for the mind and body, helping to transform the way you feel. NEOM only uses “purest possible ingredients”, which means, that “All NEOM products are 100% natural, ethically sourced, finely crafted in Britain from sustainable origins with absolutely no artificial ingredients”.
I admire their transparency and vision. Natural ingredients make me choose the candle above others and make the experience more enjoyable.
Subjective scent and scent throw evaluation:
The marriage of the essential oils creates a fantastic, crisp, “pick-me-up” scent which fills you out with positivity and works like a glass of cold water on a warm summer morning. It literally helps you awaken your senses. On the more “superficial” note, it refreshes the air, actually purifying instead of just filing it up with fake citrus notes.
The producer describes the fragrance on the packaging in the following way: “An early morning beach run. Invigorated with the warming sunshine and fresh sea breeze”.
The high percentage of the essential oils ensures that the scent fills out the room within minutes and perseveres long after extinguishing. When you leave it open and unlit on your nightstand or desk a slight citrusy note might hit you from time to time. The blend is very balanced and as the producer claims, actually makes you feel good. I am really sold on this whole aromatherapy thing. I will definitely try another NEOM candle from one of the other lines. “Awaken the senses” is almost over :(
The milk glass tumbler (slightly smaller than usual, although thanks to natural ingredients, the candle burns more efficiently) is enclosed in a simple cardboard box with a simple, feminine design with a spa feeling. Even though it’s not a deal breaker, I wouldn’t mind a slightly less flimsy packaging and maybe a lid for the candle. You can actually buy a cap for the candle (ashwood or marble) on NEOM’s webpage, which is a great option; it’s a pity it’s not included in the price of the candle…
Official producer’s online (since a couple of weeks, this candle does not appear on NEOM’s website anymore though; I fear It might have been discontinued) and real-life store as well as Amazon, Selfridges, Bath&Unwind, and TKMaxx (where I got mine).
